Gus was in the kitchen when I went downstairs, glowering at the kettle like it had killed his dog.
I faced the music and slipped into the space beside him. âSorry, man.â
âWhat for? Boning my sister, or lying about it?â
âI never lied.â
He sighed. âNo, I guess you didnât. But you couldâve told me. You think I want to see your dick before breakfast?â
âYou didnât see my dick.â I reached around him and flicked the kettle on. âBut for what itâs worth, I am sorry. This wasnât supposed to happen.â
He finally looked at me, his face unreadable. âWhat wasnât? Being with her, or me finding out?â
âNeither. I meant fucking around in your house. I was drunk last night. I wouldnât have come back here otherwise.â
âBut you still wouldâve hooked up with her?â
âI didnât hook up with her, you fucking goon. You think I could ever see her that way?â
Gusâs expression softened. âI guess not... Shit, Iâm not used to defending her honour. This is weird.â
And then some. Gus had backed out of Miaâs bedroom so fast I wasnât entirely convinced heâd seen me, but creeping out the back door felt all wrong. Gus was my friend...my best friend, when I let him be. It wasnât his fault I was in love with his sister. âI should probably go.â
âWhereâs Mia?â
âShower.â
âShe knows youâre leaving?â
âOf course. You think Iâd run outââ The words died on my lips and I shook my head. âLook, I donât know what is going down between us, but I wonât hurt her again, I promise. Whatever this is, Iâm in it for as long as she lets me, okay?â
Gus opened the cupboard next to my head. Stared at the contents and shut it again. âDo you mean that?â
âOf course. Iâm a flaky arsehole, but I donât lie. You know that.â
âYouâre not flaky. Just fucked up.â
âThanks.â
Gus shrugged. âItâs true, and I donât blame you for that, but I need you to help me take care of her, even when she doesnât want us to. Donât let her push you away.â
âI canât force her to love me.â
âI donât think thatâs ever been the issue, but Iâm not even talking about that, Iâm talking about everything else. Weâve got to look out for her, okay? Just promise me youâve got my back on this.â
A million questions exploded in my brain, but Mia breezed into the kitchen before I could speak, and instinct warned me to keep quiet as she kissed her brotherâs cheek and smirked at me over his shoulder, as though she remembered how hot Iâd always been for her with long, wet hair.
âSorry about that, frère. I didnât think you were home.â
Gus scowled. âLiar.â
âAm not.â
He snorted and I took my cue to leave, shooting Mia a glance to let her know I was far from done with her before heading for the door.
I was halfway there when Gus called me back.
âWait,â he said. âI need to talk to you about something else before you go.â
âSomething else?â Mia said. âWhat else have you two been gossiping about?â
Gus ignored her and shifted uncomfortably.
